Pain and Gain is an American crime comedy-drama film directed by Michael Bay, released on April 26 2012. It was produced by Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer and Terry Benedict for their company Armageddon Entertainment. The film was written by Skylar Gaertner, Topper Lilien and Cyrus Voris based on their 2008 television movie of the same name. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson as Daniel Lugo, Ed Harris as Henry Hillman, Mark Wahlberg as Adrian Doorbalowski and Anthony Mackie as Johnny Flanagan. They plan to rob a series of government warehouses where they believe millions in stolen cash are being stored. However, they discover that Doorbalovsky is a corrupt cop who has set the entire operation up. The film features a large number of cameos, including Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick, Dave Boat and James Gandolfini. It was released by Paramount Pictures on April 26 2012 in the United States and Canada. In this heist movie inspired by true events based on the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" written by Charles Brandt and Charles Bronson stars Mark Wahlberg as a blue collar worker from Dorchester who becomes an informant for the FBI after being repeatedly wrongfully imprisoned for a string of robberies he did not commit. After serving time, he is recruited by the FBI to infiltrate the mob family headed by Tony Segale (Ed Harris) and Henry Hillman (Dwayne Johnson) who are planning a multimillion-dollar bank robbery where they believe millions of dollars of stolen money is hidden away. He poses as a wealthy contractor who can provide advanced planning for the job. After the planning is complete, he guides them into completing the job, but when one of his team members goes "off script" and opens fire prematurely, resulting in the death of several people, all six criminals are arrested by Agent Johnny Flanagan (Anthony Mackie). They are later sentenced to life imprisonment in the Florida State Prison. The plot is inspired by the real-life events behind "I Heard You Paint Houses", which was published in 2004 under the title "Pain and Gain". The book details the activities of master thief Charles Brandt, who stole millions of dollars' worth of property through elaborate scams. The plot follows what would happen next to him amidst his imprisonment (and eventual escape after an extraordinary trial).On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 57% based on reviews from 156 critics, with an average rating of 5.6 out of 10, its consensus being: ""Pain & Gain" plays it safe with all its villains and stars alike.
